This page tells you what we are going to do to help you become aware of some of the media issues that affect you. You will be working together as a class (C), in groups (G) and individually (I). We will be working on this over a six week period and by the end of that time your group will have produced an advertisement to share with your classmates, parents and whanau informing children your age of the things they need to be aware of when using websites.
Some activities will happen over a period of weeks as people and resources become available. There will be a workshop to help with the technology side of things and a visitor from the advertising industry.
Workshop - Community/school/classroom experts
We are looking for people who can help us produce an advertisement. We need to learn - how to use cameras to create the images we want, how to use programs like photoshop to manipulate content and how to put our ideas all together to produce the impact we want.
Are you an expert or do you know someone who is? It could be someone in your whānau, a friend or someone in our community. They might be good at using a specific program or using a camera. They might be working in advertising, a graphic designer or a photographer. Really we're looking for anyone that can help, even in the smallest way. Click here to make suggestions or add names and details. Week 1 Bring in toys, games and anything else that is merchandise from a TV program, film or advertisement. We'll be using these in Week 3.
Some activities you can work on throughout the week. Homework - download a copy of the mathematical survey.
This task can be done on your own or with others. Get a classmate, a friend, a parent or whānau to help you. Remember often two heads are better than one!
How cool is this… your task is to watch TV! Observe the advertising that is screened during 30 minutes of TV viewing.
Enter your data from your statistical survey here. This will need to be completed by day 5.
Day 1 C - We will have a look around the wiki, look at the activities and things that need to be done individually, in groups and as a class. Then we'll discuss what it means to work collaboratively and groups will be sorted out.
I - Create an Invitation You need to produce an invitation, inviting your parents to this wikispace. We want them to be involved, know what we're doing and help if they can. Use the rubric to guide this activity. This will need to be completed by tomorrow. Day 2 C - We're going to look at some ads. They can be very clever. They can be fun and entertain. We'll talk about what ads you like, or that make an impact, and discuss why. Day 5 C - Analyse and discuss findings from the mathematical survey and come to some conclusion about what our data tells us. Week 2
Most of this week is spent working with your group, however, you can play the games by yourself. Day 1 G - View popular ads and analyse them looking for advertising techniques and help construct a list of advertising techniques used
Day 1 C - Look at and discuss TV, film and other merchandise. What programs or films etc. are they from? Did it come from something that was purchased or was the merchandise purchased independently? Was it asked for? Who bought it? Have you seen the program or film? Why do you think it was made? Choose a piece of merchandise. Research what other products have been developed around this character/theme. Day 2-4 G - How does merchandise promote a product? Photograph some of the merchandise. Make a poster using a collage of the photographs. Include information about who/what is behind the merchandise and any other information your group thinks is relevant. Day 5 G - Share with the class.
Week 4
Day 1 C - Make a list of the internet sites that are used by members of this class. Discussion. What's good about them? What do they offer - games/competitions etc.? Day 2-4 G - Visit websites from the list available on Children's Websites. Download a copy of some questions that will guide you in your analysis of these sites Day 5 C - Discuss the findings from the websites. Brainstorm questions children should ask themselves before using a website. Add questions to Before Using A Website
Week 5-6
Week 5 Day 1 I - Create an Invitation You need to produce an invitation, inviting your parents to a viewing of the advertisements produced by our class. Use the rubric to guide this activity. This will need to be completed by tomorrow. Week 5 Day 2 - Week 6 Day 3 G - Using the list of advertising techniques, the questions children should ask themselves before using a website and the skills you have learned from our technology and advertising experts, create an advertisement informing children your age of one thing they need to be aware of when visiting websites. The advertisement may be in the form of a static or moving image. Embed your advertisement into a digital story explaining the process you went through to make the image, the advertising techniques you have used and your message. Tutorials
